2011 03 24 : Hong Kong Government Begins EV Pilot Program with Nissan LEAF

The next destination for the Zero-emission experience

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. is proud to announce the start of an EV Pilot Program in collaboration with the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSARG) today on 15th March, 2011 a launch ceremony. 200 units of 100% electric, zero-emission Nissan LEAF, the world’s first mass-market EV will be delivered to the HKSARG to be used by the government, power companies and other private companies.  Officiating the ceremony, Mr. John C. Tsang, J.P. Financial Secretary HKSARG also announced the Government’s latest expansion plan for the EV charging network which aims to facilitate wider use of EVs in the region.

In the ceremony held today at the headquarters of the Electrical and Mechanical Service Department, Mr. Tsang said that the Government is committed to develop a user-friendly environment for all EVs users.

“In collaboration with the power companies and the property development sector, we are glad that some 300 charging points across all 18 districts are now available for public use around Hong Kong,” said Mr. Tsang.

“This is a strong message to our community that Hong Kong is an EV-friendly city with a strong infrastructural support for its adoption. Together with incentives from the Pilot Green Transport Fund to be set up in this month, the adoption of EVs is expected to take a big leap forward in the coming years,” Mr. Tsang continued. In order to let more people experience Electric Vehicle – LEAF, Honest Motors Limited, authorized dealer of Nissan in Hong Kong arranged a LEAF test drive event for a number of medias, Hong Kong corporations and general public in Science Park, Shatin from 16th to 19th March. Test drive results were inspiring, as they were satisfied with the performance of LEAF and confident with the Government’s infrastructure support.

To promote wider use of EVs in Hong Kong, Nissan and HKSARG signed a MoU in April 2009, and in the last two years have been working closely together to organize this pilot scheme.

Speaking at the same event, Noboru Tateishi, Program Director in charge of zero-emission business of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. said, “Nissan LEAF was launched in Japan and the United States in December last year, followed by selected markets in Europe this month. Today, I am very pleased to announce that Hong Kong will be the next market to introduce the Nissan LEAF, ahead of other regions. Beginning this EV pilot program in Hong Kong is a significant first step for us as we set on to mass-market the Nissan LEAF globally by 2012.”

“We are greatly honored to work closely with the Hong Kong government during its pilot program to ensure new mobility of less dependence on oil and a cleaner environment.  And we would to invite the government, corporate sectors and people in Hong Kong to feel the benefits and new experience of EV through this pilot program,” Tateishi continued.

The Nissan LEAF is powered by a compact electric motor, which drives the front wheels.  The AC motor develops a power output of 109PS and 280Nm of torque, enough for a maximum speed of 145 km/h.  The electric motor is powered by advanced laminated lithium-ion batteries with an output of more than 90kW.  The car has a range of 160 km (US LA4 mode) between charges, making it a practical proposition for many urban drivers.

Aiming to be a global leader in zero-emission mobility with Alliance partner Renault, Nissan is taking a comprehensive approach to promote sustainable mobility.  This includes Alliance’s engagement with more than 90 zero-emission partnerships with government, municipalities and companies worldwide, the deployment of charging infrastructure and the promotion of recycling parts used in vehicle production.
